Avis is a Portuguese village that is located about 150 km from Lisbon in the district of Portalegre, Alentejo region, and Alto Alentejo sub-region, with 1 840 inhabitants (2011). It is the seat of a municipality with an area of 605.97 km² and 4,571 inhabitants (2011), subdivided into 6 parishes. The municipality is limited to the northeast by the municipality of Alter do Chão, to the east by Fronteira, to the south by Sousel and Mora, and to the northwest by Ponte de Sor.
