Monforte is a Portuguese town in the district of Portalegre, in the Alentejo region and in the Alto Alentejo sub-region, with 1,380 inhabitants (2011).
It is the seat of a municipality with 420.25 km² in area and 3 329 inhabitants (2011), subdivided into 4 parishes. The municipality is limited to the west and north by the municipalities of Crato and Portalegre, to the east by Arronches and Elvas, to the southwest by Borba and Estremoz, to the west by Fronteira and to the northwest by Alter do Chão.
Climate
It has a markedly Mediterranean climate, characterized by a very sharp dry season in summer. Precipitation is around 500 mm between the months of October and March and 170 mm in the driest semester.
Economy
In the municipality, activities related to the primary sector predominate, that is, agriculture and cattle breeding, followed by those in the secondary sector, represented by the granite mining industries. The tertiary sector is not of great economic importance.
As far as agriculture is concerned, there are cereal crops for grain, temporary meadows and forage crops, industrial crops, fallow, olive groves, permanent meadows, and pastures. Livestock also has some importance, namely in the creation of pigs, sheep, and cattle.
About 164 hectares of its territory are covered with forest.
